Liked: Great location and lovely staff

Disliked: Our room wasnt cleaned during our stay and we had to bother the staff for towels and trash pickup. The sink was very small and the faucet wasn't securely fastened to the sink.

    Terrible

    Liked: Very little

Disliked: £110 a night for a cold, dirty room with dangerous broken tiles. Really disappointing I paid £110 for one night at the Earl of Darby and to be honest I was really disappointed with the standard of the room. For that sort of money I expected a lot better. There was a really strange unpleasant smell in the room and it was absolutely freezing. There was a small electric heater but it was pretty useless and didn’t do much to warm the room up. The bed was also really uncomfortable so I didn’t get a great night’s sleep either. The bathroom was probably the worst part. The floor tiles were badly cracked and broken with sharp edges sticking up which could easily cut your feet if you were walking around barefoot. I’ve attached photos so people can see what I mean. It’s actually quite dangerous and I’m surprised they’re letting people stay in rooms like this without getting it sorted. The bathroom wasn’t particularly clean either. The sealant around the bath and sink was dirty and deteriorating and the whole place just looked like it hadn’t been properly maintained for a long time. There wasn’t even a handle or lock on the bathroom door. I was staying on my own in a twin room so the privacy side of things didn’t bother me personally but if two people were sharing the room it would definitely be an issue. Either way it’s another basic thing that should have been sorted. I got up at around 6.30am the following morning to leave for work and there was nobody around and all the doors were locked. I couldn’t find anyone to speak to about the room or complain to so I ended up having to leave the key in the room and head off to work. I’m not expecting luxury and I appreciate it’s not a five star hotel but for £110 a night I think it’s perfectly reasonable to expect a clean room, a comfortable bed, decent heating and a bathroom that’s actually safe to use. The broken tiles are what concern me the most because someone could genuinely hurt themselves on them.

This property is hugely overpriced for the standard

Liked: Did not eat here. Basic pub food

Disliked: Needs a total refurbishment. Bar area has bare walls and being replastered. Bedroom door locks don’t work properly. Window handles broken. Shower needs re grouting and proper clean. Shower does not stay on supporting poles. No coat hangers.

Disliked: Staff smoking all time...room in a poor state...only had one breakfast out of 3 because of staff smoking before cooking...not good a beer pub...

A perfectly satisfactory stay at a very reasonable price

Liked: The location suited where I needed to be the following day and I always prefer to stay in pubs and small hotels that have character and atmosphere. In these regards, the Earl of Derby did not disappoint. The staff were very obliging and my room, albeit small, was clean, comfortable and provided all the necessary facilities. It was good value for money, and I would use it again if a similar requirement arose.

Disliked: The room was small but perfectly functional. Unfortunately, time did not permit me to sample a full breakfast which I would otherwise have done, but what I did have was very enjoyable.
