Lovely, well-appointed hotel that feels fancy at a reasonable price

Liked: Strand Palace was a lovely, exceptionally large hotel, very near the Thames, Waterloo Bridge, and across from The famous Savoy. A detail I loved was the reusable water bottles in the room with water refill stations on every floor. The chocolates were also delicious. The decor was cozy and upscale. Our room windows had solid shutters so you could fully block street traffic and lights at night. The beds were comfortable and the bathroom was lovely. We had an issue with our toilet late at night (the water wouldn't stop running), reception sent a technician up to the room promptly who was incredibly polite, quiet, and quick in addressing the issue. I did appreciate the WhatsApp-based AI agent you could engage with to get support, though it refused to help with some issues (see below for the coffee maker fiasco).

Disliked: When we checked in, the staff said something about giving us an upgrade, which I figured was nice of them but when we went to the room, it was missing key things we had paid for on reservation - namely a street side view and twin beds. The upgrade room was also a tighter overall space due to a couch added to the room. I went back to reception and asked to be given the room we'd originally booked. I guess I appreciate the attempt at an "upgrade" but when booking for specific features, I would have preferred the staff ask if I'm okay with all details of the change. They did give us the room with a view that we requested, and they arranged for the twin beds, as well. A note on the twin beds - it was a king bed that they separated into two twins, which I've seen many hotels do. However, the beds were not fixed to the floor in any way and rolled with the slightest pressure. At one point, I was getting out of the bed and ended up on the floor because the bed rolled out from under me. It was funny but also maybe find a way to lock the beds into place. The room had a coffee caddy, which is great, but no instructions on how to use the coffee machine. I tried to get guidance via the hotel's WhatsApp-based AI-customer service exchange but it refused to help since it said an electrical appliance was dangerous! I used chatGPT instead and was able to figure it out. I recommended to the AI-agent that they provide in-room instructions on how to use the coffee machine in the future. The coffee pods were also not labeled so I again used the internet to identify which pod was decaf vs caffeinated coffee.

Liked: The location is just great. You can walk to many main attractions within minutes. The room was clean and tidy and has all what I needed for a short stay as a solo traveler. Not my first time there and definitely not the last.

Disliked: I would recommend to install more lights in rooms. At night the room is a bit dark specially around the closet and it was a bit hard to find stuff easily, I used my phone flashlight. A smart TV upgrade would be amazing too. The LCD TVs are really outdated. Bathrooms need to have a slide door.
