Where to stay in London: the best areas

West End and Soho

Between Covent Garden, Soho and Piccadilly are the theatres, shops and nightlife, with hotels of every category, many of them small and design-led. It is the most convenient base for getting around on foot, though also the priciest and noisiest.

Westminster and the South Bank

Around Parliament, the London Eye and the Thames walks there are large chain hotels and some luxury ones with river views. At night it is quieter than the West End and well connected by Tube and on foot.

Kensington and Chelsea

Between Hyde Park and the South Kensington museums there are plenty of hotels in white-fronted Victorian townhouses, from simple ones to five-star properties. It is an elegant, safe area and a little cheaper on its side streets.

Bloomsbury and King’s Cross

Around the British Museum and the King’s Cross and St Pancras stations there are many mid-range hotels and B&Bs on Georgian squares. It is practical if you arrive on the Eurostar or want to get around the whole city by Tube.

The City and Shoreditch

In the financial district, by the Tower of London and St Paul’s, there are business hotels whose prices drop at weekends. To the north, Shoreditch has design hotels, bars and markets with a younger feel.
