What the Costa de Almería is like
It’s the driest coast in the peninsula: bare mountains dropping into the sea, greenhouses in the west and the Cabo de Gata-Níjar nature park, with volcanic coves and very clear water. It has more than 300 days of sunshine a year, and the sea stays warm well into autumn.
Which area to choose
Roquetas de Mar and Almerimar, in the west, have most of the big beach and all-inclusive hotels. The city of Almería has a seafront promenade and an old town with the Alcazaba. In Cabo de Gata, San José, Agua Amarga and Las Negras have small hotels and rural houses, and Mojácar and Vera, in the north, combine a white village and a beach.
When to go
From May to October for the beach; in July and August Cabo de Gata fills up and some coves restrict car access. In winter the weather is mild and many travellers come to walk in the nature park.
Getting around
Almería airport is about 10 km from the city. A car is best for exploring the coast: distances are long and buses between villages are infrequent.
