Níjar old town

The historic core is tucked into the slope of the Sierra Alhamilla, with narrow white streets climbing towards the parish church of Santa María and the Plaza del Mercado. Staying here lets you see the village in the morning, before the shops open. There are rural houses and small places to stay. It's for curious travellers who enjoy the local taverns and the walk up to the watchtower.

Potters' quarter and the main street

In the lower part, along the street that leads into the village, are the pottery workshops and the shops selling jarapas, the local rag rugs. It suits families and those arriving late by car.

Huebro and the sierra

Above Níjar, a narrow road climbs to Huebro, an almost deserted hamlet with old water mills and views across the whole plain to the sea. There are a few rural houses, with a silence that's hard to find on the coast. It's an option for hikers and those looking to switch off, bearing in mind that the road up and down is winding. Farmhouses of the Campo de Níjar

Between the village and the nature park lies the plain, with restored farmhouses, prickly pears and arid landscapes. Many have become places to stay with a pool and courtyard. From here you can drive to San José, Rodalquilar or Agua Amarga without paying beachfront prices. Bear in mind that much of the plain is covered by greenhouses, so check the location carefully.
