Where to stay in Cabo de Gata: the best areas

San José

San José is the village with the most services in the natural park: a marina, a calm town beach, restaurants, bike and kayak hire and shops to stock up. From here, paths lead to the beaches of Los Genoveses and Mónsul, two of the most photographed stretches of sand on the Almería coast. If it is your first trip to the park, you are travelling with children or you fancy eating out every night, everything is close at hand here.

San Miguel de Cabo de Gata

This fishing village, with low houses facing a long, straight beach, sits next to the salt flats, where flamingos can be seen almost all year. Following the road south you reach the lighthouse and the Arrecife de las Sirenas. It is the village closest to Almería and the airport, and it appeals to birdwatchers, cyclists and anyone after something simple without crowds. The flat road around the salt flats is perfect for cycling.

Los Escullos and La Isleta del Moro

North of San José, these two small villages look out over coves of volcanic rock. Los Escullos has the San Felipe castle above the beach, and La Isleta del Moro is a fishing hamlet with its harbour and fish restaurants. There are few places to stay, the odd small shop and lots of silence. They suit divers, couples and anyone wanting clear water for snorkelling.

Rodalquilar

Inland, in a valley ringed by old volcanic hills, Rodalquilar keeps the buildings of its old gold mines and the El Albardinal botanical garden. El Playazo beach, with its defensive tower, is close by. It is a village for walkers and for those seeking rural houses and dark skies. A car is essential for getting around the park, because the distances between villages are long and buses are infrequent.
