Where to stay in Agua Amarga: the best areas

The village facing the beach

Agua Amarga is small and arranged around its beach, a half-moon of sand in front of the houses. In the streets behind are white houses, a few shops and restaurants with terraces. Staying here lets you leave the car parked and do everything on foot, from the morning swim to dinner.

You can also walk over the hill to Cala de Enmedio. Beds are few and in July and August they go quickly. Outside those weeks, the village is very peaceful.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Senderos, with a score of 9.1 from 934 reviews.

Farmhouses and country houses

Around the village, among dry hills and dirt tracks, there are restored farmhouses and country houses converted into accommodation. Many have pools and views of the natural park. They are for those seeking a total break, starry skies and complete silence. A car is essential here, and some access roads are unpaved tracks, so ask how to get there first. From the countryside it is easy to head to Cala del Plomo, Rodalquilar or Níjar.

Carboneras

To the north, past Los Muertos beach and the Mesa Roldán lighthouse, is Carboneras. It is a larger, less touristy town, with San Andrés castle, a promenade and everyday services. It has more accommodation when Agua Amarga is full. From here you continue along the coast to Mojácar or return to the park’s coves in a few minutes. Bear in mind its landscape is more industrial, with the power station and port in view, but the promenade and castle have their charm. It is practical for families who want a supermarket, a pharmacy and a variety of restaurants at hand.
