What the Rías Altas are like
They are the estuaries of northern Galicia, from A Coruña to the Ribadeo estuary: a coast of very high cliffs, such as those at Vixía Herbeira, open beaches and deep estuaries with fishing villages.
Which area to choose
A Coruña and Ferrol have the most choice. Betanzos is a medieval town at the head of its estuary. Cedeira and Ortigueira are quiet towns near San Andrés de Teixido, and Viveiro, on the Lugo coast, has an old town and beaches.
When to go
July and August have the best weather. In July the Ortigueira Festival fills the area. Outside summer it rains often.
Getting around
A Coruña airport is about 10 km from the city. There’s a narrow-gauge coastal railway to Ferrol and Viveiro, but it’s slow; a car is more practical.
