A Magdalena

The 18th-century grid district is the heart of the city. Its straight streets, such as Rúa Real or Rúa Galiano, are full of houses with white glazed galleries, shops and bars. Nearby are the co-cathedral of San Xiao, Praza de Armas and Praza de Amboage.

Being a flat, compact district, you can cross it on foot in no time. It suits you if you are coming to see the city without depending on the car and want to have dinner near where you are staying.

Ferrol Vello and Curuxeiras

The oldest district runs down to the Curuxeiras quay, where the Camino Inglés begins. Here the streets are narrow and a little steep, with fishermen’s houses and long-established taverns.

Sleeping here makes sense if you are starting the Way of Saint James first thing or want views of the estuary. The Naval Museum and Exponav are near the arsenal, a short distance away.

North of A Magdalena, Canido is a district of low houses that has filled up with murals. The Meninas de Canido, versions of Velázquez’s painting on façades and walls, draw many visitors. It has a relaxed, neighbourly feel and is a stroll from the centre. It works well for long stays or for anyone who prefers a district with a life of its own.

Esteiro and the beaches

Esteiro, by the university campus, has more modern flats and everyday services, with an easy way out to the area’s roads. If the sea is your thing, the beaches of Doniños and San Xurxo are in the west of the municipality, among pine woods and cliffs. There, accommodation is more scattered and a car becomes necessary, including to reach San Felipe castle.
