Where to stay in Ortigueira: the best areas

Ortigueira town

Ortigueira looks out over the estuary with its harbour, waterside gardens and the Teatro de la Beneficencia building. Its streets hold most of the municipality's bars, shops and restaurants. A path runs along the estuary shore, pleasant for an evening walk and for watching birds on the marshes. Staying in town lets you walk to dinner and have the narrow-gauge railway station that runs along the north coast close at hand.

Morouzos

On the outskirts, by the estuary, is Morouzos beach, with its pine wood and dunes. The pine wood hosts the Festival Internacional do Mundo Celta, which fills the area with music and camping. The rest of the year it is a quiet place for walking and swimming in estuary waters.

If you are coming for the festival, book well ahead, as the town and surroundings run out of beds on those days.

Espasante

Where the estuary opens to the sea, Espasante is a fishing village with a harbour and San Antonio beach, with fine, sheltered sand. It has more of a beach atmosphere than the town and is convenient for families wanting to spend the day on the sand. From here you can continue along the coast to Cabo Ortegal and the Cariño cliffs.

Loiba and the high coast

Between Espasante and the border with Cariño, the coast becomes high and wild. Loiba has the viewpoint with the bench famous for its views over the Bay of Biscay, and below it are coves reached by paths. Accommodation here is rural and scattered, with stone houses and meadows. It suits you if you are looking for isolation and scenery, but you will depend on the car for eating out and shopping.
