Where to stay in Betanzos: the best areas

Historic centre

Betanzos’ historic centre climbs a hill and holds almost everything you come to see: the churches of San Francisco, Santiago and Santa María do Azougue, the stone streets and the arcaded Praza dos Irmáns García Naveira. Sleeping here lets you walk everywhere and go out to dinner without watching the clock, with the tortilla bars round the corner.

The slopes are steep and parking in the centre is difficult, so ask about parking before you arrive if you are driving.

Best-rated in this area: Hostal Pórtico, with a score of 9.2 from 886 reviews.

The Mandeo riverside and the bridges

At the foot of the old town, by the river Mandeo and the stone bridges, is the area of the old river port. It is flat and pleasant for an evening walk along the bank, with taverns and fishermen’s houses. From here you are up in the historic centre in a moment, with the road out to the surrounding area nearby.

Newer districts and the stations

Outside the old walls, the more modern part of town has wide streets, shops and easier parking. Betanzos has two train stations, Betanzos-Cidade and Betanzos-Infesta, with trains to A Coruña, Ferrol and Lugo, making it a convenient base without a car. The A-6 and AP-9 also pass very close, so it is a good spot for combining a visit with meetings or errands in A Coruña.

Surroundings and the Betanzos estuary

Among the meadows and hamlets of the neighbouring municipalities there are rural houses and manor houses converted into accommodation. The Betanzos estuary, with its beaches at Miño and Bergondo, and the Fragas do Eume are close by. With your own car and a wish to mix countryside and sea, you will sleep very peacefully here, although you will have to drive to eat in town.
