San Pedro de la Rúa

The medieval quarter, across the Ega, holds Estella’s finest Romanesque treasures. On Plaza de San Martín stand the Palace of the Kings of Navarre, now the Gustavo de Maeztu museum, and the church of San Pedro de la Rúa with its cloister. Calle de la Rúa is the town stretch of the Camino de Santiago.

Staying here is the choice for walking out to the monuments or setting off on the Way very early. It is the quietest part of the old town at night, because the bar scene is on the other bank.

Plaza de los Fueros

The main square, with arcades and the church of San Juan, is the centre of social life. Around it are bars, terraces and shops, and this is where the evening and night-time buzz is. It suits you if you want tapas and everything close by. It is very lively in the evenings, especially at weekends. From here you cross the Ega by nearby bridges and reach San Pedro de la Rúa in no time.

San Miguel and El Puy

Up the hill, the church of San Miguel has a Romanesque portal full of carved scenes. Higher still, the basilica of El Puy offers a viewpoint over the town and the valley. The streets here are more residential and quiet. It is fine for resting, though you have to reckon with slopes on the way back to the centre.

Ayegui and Irache

Ayegui adjoins Estella, following the Camino towards Los Arcos. Here are the Irache monastery and its famous wine fountain for pilgrims, with Montejurra in the background. There are housing estates and places to stay with parking, near the A-12 motorway linking Pamplona and Logroño. It suits travellers with a car looking for more space. If you plan to tour Tierra Estella by car, parking is easy here.
