By the Royal Palace

The Royal Palace of the kings of Navarre dominates the town with its towers, and beside it is the church of Santa María la Real, whose Gothic doorway is richly detailed. Sleeping here lets you see the palace lit up at night, once the tour groups have gone. The surrounding streets are narrow and stone-paved, with stately houses and little traffic, so it is the part preferred by couples and those travelling to unwind.

Plaza Carlos III and Rúa Mayor

Plaza Carlos III is Olite’s living room, with terraces and, beneath it, medieval galleries you can visit. From here the Rúa Mayor sets off, with houses bearing coats of arms and the church of San Pedro at the end. On nearby Plaza de los Teobaldos is the Navarre Wine Museum. It is the place for an unhurried dinner and a walk back. At weekends it is livelier, with groups coming to eat and taste wine.

Wineries and vineyards on the outskirts

Around the town spread the vineyards and wineries of the Navarra denomination, many offering visits and tastings. Some rural houses and places with gardens are on the roads out of town. It suits you if you are driving, want peace and plan a wine route. It is also a good starting point for the Bardenas Reales, to the south.

The old town is close, although the roads are not lit at night.

Tafalla

A few kilometres to the north, Tafalla is a larger town with its own daily life: shops, pintxo bars and a station on the line to Pamplona. It has more choice and is usually cheaper. In return you lose the charm of strolling around Olite at night, so consider it for long stays or groups.
