What to see in Bath
Must-sees
Bath owes its name to the Roman Baths, the best-preserved in northern Europe, with their great pool of green water next to the abbey. In the 18th century it became the aristocracy’s fashionable spa and filled with honey-coloured Georgian stone buildings: the Royal Crescent, the Circus and Pulteney Bridge, lined with shops over the River Avon.
The city’s museums include the Jane Austen Centre, dedicated to the novelist who lived here and set her books in Bath, and the Fashion Museum. Today you can bathe in thermal water at Thermae Bath Spa, with a rooftop pool overlooking the abbey.
Free tours and guided visits
Bath has guided tours of the Georgian centre and the baths, and routes on Jane Austen and Bridgerton, which was filmed in its streets. It is a regular stop on day trips from London that combine it with Stonehenge, Lacock or the Cotswolds.
How long to spend
One day covers the baths, the abbey, the Royal Crescent and a walk round the centre. If you want the thermal spa without rushing and a museum or two, allow two. Bath is also a good base for exploring the Cotswolds and Wells.
Where to stay
The ideal is to stay in the Georgian centre, although it is expensive and parking is scarce. The most elegant hotels are by the Royal Crescent, and there are more affordable guesthouses near the station.
