What to see in Cambridge

Must-sees

Cambridge revolves around its university and the River Cam. The jewel is King’s College Chapel, with its fan vaulting, and next to it are Trinity College, where Newton studied, and St John’s, with its Bridge of Sighs. Behind the colleges, the Backs are the lawns and gardens that run down to the river.

The free Fitzwilliam Museum has a first-rate collection of art and antiquities. The market square, the antiquarian bookshops and historic pubs such as The Eagle, where the discovery of DNA was announced, complete the walk. For a view from above, climb the tower of Great St Mary’s.

Free tours and guided visits

Cambridge has guided tours of the colleges, some including entry to King’s College, and punting trips along the Backs with a guide who tells the story of each building. From London there are day trips combining Cambridge with Oxford.

How long to spend

One day is enough for the main colleges, the river and the centre, and it can be done from London, less than an hour away by train. With two days there is time for museums, a riverside walk to Grantchester and Ely Cathedral.

Where to stay

The centre has few, expensive hotels. Around the station and on Mill Road there are more affordable options fifteen minutes’ walk away, and in Chesterton quiet B&Bs by the river.
