What to see in York

Must-sees

York keeps almost all of its medieval walls, which you can walk for about three kilometres. Inside, York Minster is one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in northern Europe, with huge stained-glass windows and a tower you can climb. The streets around it, such as The Shambles and Stonegate, have timber-framed houses that almost touch at the top.

The city was Roman and Viking: the Jorvik Viking Centre recreates Viking York. The free National Railway Museum and Clifford’s Tower, on its mound, are other visits. For a break, Bettys tea rooms are an institution.

Free tours and guided visits

York has guided tours of the old town and the walls, and night-time ghost walks, very popular in one of England’s most legend-filled cities. Excursions leave from here for the Yorkshire Dales, the North York Moors and Whitby Abbey.

How long to spend

A busy day is enough for the Minster, the walls and The Shambles, but with two you will enjoy it much more and have time for the museums. York is under two hours from London by train and a base for exploring Yorkshire.

Where to stay

Inside the walls you sleep in historic buildings, a step from everything. Near the station there are large Victorian hotels, and in Bootham and Clifton cheaper B&Bs with parking.
