What to see in Chester

Must-sees

Chester was a Roman fortress and keeps the most complete city walls in Britain, which you can walk all the way round in about three kilometres. Inside, The Rows are two-tier timber shopping galleries, unique in the world, and the Eastgate Clock is one of the most photographed in England.

The cathedral, with its medieval cloister, the Roman amphitheatre and the oldest racecourse in England complete the visit. Along the River Dee there are walks and boat trips.

Free tours and guided visits

Chester has guided tours of the walls and the Roman city, and tours led by a Roman legionary. Excursions from Liverpool and Manchester include it.

How long to spend

One day is enough for the walls, The Rows and the cathedral. Chester is less than an hour from Liverpool and Manchester, and close to North Wales.
