Staying near Plaka: what you need to know

What is Plaka?

Plaka is the oldest district of Athens, on the north and east slopes of the Acropolis: cobbled streets, neoclassical houses, Byzantine churches and tavernas with terraces. Inside it is Anafiotika, a corner of white houses that looks like a Cycladic island.

Getting around from here

Everything important is walkable: the Acropolis, the Roman Agora, Monastiraki and Syntagma Square. The metro from Syntagma goes straight to the airport and the one from Monastiraki to Piraeus.

When the hotels fill up

The hotels here are small and fill up from April to October, especially those with Acropolis views. Booking ahead is almost essential in summer.

Which area to choose

Adrianou Street and around are the liveliest; towards Anafiotika and Kydathineon Street the district is quieter. Near Syntagma there are larger hotels a step away.
