Staying near the Acropolis: what you need to know

What is the Acropolis?

It is the sacred rock of Athens, with the Parthenon, the Erechtheion and the Propylaea, and on its slopes the Theatre of Dionysus and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. At its foot is the Acropolis Museum, with the original sculptures.

Getting around from here

From the hotels nearby you can walk to Plaka, the Ancient Agora, Monastiraki and Syntagma within fifteen minutes. For the airport and Piraeus, take the metro from Akropoli or Syntagma.

When the hotels fill up

From May to October the hotels with rooftop terraces facing the Parthenon fill up early and prices rise. In winter there is more availability and fewer people on the rock.

Which area to choose

Makrygianni and Koukaki, to the south, are quiet districts by the museum. Plaka, to the east, is more touristy, and Thissio, to the west, has terraces looking up at the rock.
