What to see in Andria

Must-sees

Andria is in northern Puglia, between the Adriatic coast and the Murge plateau, surrounded by olive and almond trees. Its big draw is Castel del Monte, the octagonal castle built by Frederick II, a World Heritage Site, which stands on a hill about 15 kilometres from the centre. Its eight-sided plan, with eight towers that are also octagonal, has given rise to many theories about its purpose.

In the town, the cathedral, founded in the 12th century, holds in its crypt the tombs of Yolande of Brienne and Isabella of England, two of Frederick II's wives. The Porta Sant'Andrea keeps a Latin inscription recalling Andria's loyalty to the emperor. Walk around the historic centre too, with the ducal palace and the church of Sant'Agostino. Andria is the land of burrata and of wines and oils from the Castel del Monte appellation.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free tours in Andria. For Castel del Monte you can go on your own or book a private guided visit, which helps you understand the building's geometry and its link with Frederick II. Bear in mind that you walk up to the castle from a car park lower down. The centre of Andria is easy to explore on your own, and in the surrounding area there are masserie offering tastings of oil, wine and cheese.

How long to spend

Castel del Monte takes an hour or two, plus the drive. The centre of Andria needs another half day, so a full day is enough for both. If you have two days, combine the visit with the coastal towns of Trani and Barletta, a short distance away, or with a route through the Alta Murgia National Park.

Where to stay

Staying in the centre of Andria keeps you close to restaurants and monuments, with hotels and guesthouses. If you want to be nearer the castle, the Murge countryside has masserie and agriturismi surrounded by olive trees, designed for those travelling by car. Another option is to stay in Trani or Barletta, by the sea, with more choice and evening atmosphere.
