What to see in Scilla
Must-sees
Scilla is at the tip of Calabria, facing the Strait of Messina, on the stretch of coast called the Costa Viola. Castello Ruffo occupies the promontory separating the two seaside parts of the village, and from its terraces you can see the strait and, on clear days, the coast of Sicily. The name recalls Scylla, the sea monster of the Odyssey, which tradition places on this rock.
On one side of the castle is Chianalea, the old fishermen's quarter, with houses built on the rocks and alleys running straight down to the water. On the other side is Marina Grande, the main beach, with its promenade. In the upper town, Piazza San Rocco serves as a viewpoint over the beach and the castle. Scilla is known for its traditional swordfish fishing, which you will see on many menus.
Free tours and guided visits
There are no regular free tours in Scilla. The activity Civitatis offers is a boat trip along the Costa Viola, letting you see the castle, Chianalea and the cliffs from the sea, with stops for a swim. The rest you can visit on your own, on foot and at a relaxed pace. It is also easy to take the train to Reggio Calabria, whose archaeological museum holds the Riace Bronzes.
How long to spend
The village can be seen in a morning or an afternoon: castle, Chianalea and a stroll along Marina Grande. If you want beach time and a boat trip, stay two or three days. Many travellers combine Scilla with Reggio Calabria or a hop over to Messina by ferry from Villa San Giovanni, which is very close.
Where to stay
To enjoy the village once it empties, stay in Chianalea or Marina Grande. Chianalea has small B&Bs and houses by the water, full of charm though with narrow alleys cars cannot enter. Marina Grande has more of a beach feel, with apartments and hotels near the promenade. For more choice, Villa San Giovanni and Reggio Calabria are a short train ride away.
