What to see in Modica
Must-sees
Modica is in south-eastern Sicily, in the province of Ragusa, and is one of the late baroque towns of the Val di Noto listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town is split in two: Modica Bassa, on the valley floor, crossed by Corso Umberto I, and Modica Alta, clinging to the hillside. In the lower town the church of San Pietro stands out, with statues of the apostles on its steps, and above is the cathedral of San Giorgio, reached by a long stairway with views over the rooftops.
It is worth climbing to the Castello dei Conti and its clock tower, which dominates the valley, and looking for the rock church of San Nicolò Inferiore, carved into the rock with medieval paintings. In the centre you can see the birthplace of the poet Salvatore Quasimodo, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature. And don't leave without trying Modica chocolate, made cold, with a grainy texture and protected by a geographical indication.
Free tours and guided visits
There are no regular free tours in Modica. What is on offer are private guided tours of the historic centre, covering the baroque churches of both parts of the town and usually including a stop to taste the chocolate. If you are staying in Ragusa or Syracuse, there are also day trips combining Modica with other towns of the Val di Noto.
How long to spend
A day is enough for the essentials: Corso Umberto I and San Pietro in the morning; the climb to San Giorgio and the castle in the afternoon, taking the slopes slowly. With two days you can add Ragusa Ibla, Scicli or the coast at Marina di Modica, all a short drive away.
Where to stay
The most convenient choice is to stay in Modica Bassa, near Corso Umberto I, where there are small hotels, guesthouses and apartments in restored palazzi, with restaurants and chocolate shops within walking distance. Modica Alta is quieter and has better views, but means going up and down stairs. If you travel by car, parking in the centre is difficult, so ask about parking before you book.
