What to see in Maranello
Must-sees
Maranello lies south of Modena, where the plain starts to rise towards the Apennines, and its name is linked to Ferrari, which has its headquarters and factory here. The main visit is the Ferrari Museum, opened in 1990, with Formula 1 single-seaters, sports prototypes and road models from different eras. Around town you will also see shops dedicated to the brand and red cars driving past at all hours.
Next to the town is the Fiorano track, the brand's test circuit, which cannot be visited on your own. Maranello is part of the ceramics district, with Sassuolo and Fiorano Modenese. In Fiorano Modenese you can see Spezzano castle and in Sassuolo the Ducal Palace. Half an hour away is Modena, with its Romanesque cathedral, the Ghirlandina tower and Piazza Grande, a World Heritage Site, and the Enzo Ferrari Museum, next to the founder's birthplace.
Free tours and guided visits
There are no free tours in Maranello. What Civitatis offers revolves around Ferrari: entry to the museum, a combination with a bus ride past the Fiorano track and the factory, and experiences driving a Ferrari on local roads. If you want a guided city tour, you will find one in Modena or Bologna, from where excursions to Maranello also leave.
How long to spend
The Ferrari Museum takes two or three hours, a little more with the bus past Fiorano. Half a day is enough for Maranello. If you combine it with the Enzo Ferrari Museum and the centre of Modena, allow a full day, or two at a relaxed pace. It is easy to add a visit to a Lambrusco winery or a balsamic vinegar acetaia in the province.
Where to stay
Maranello has hotels near the museum and the factory, practical if you come just for Ferrari and by car. For dinner and strolling with more atmosphere, staying in Modena is a better option: it is about twenty kilometres away and has more choice in the historic centre. Neighbouring Sassuolo and Fiorano Modenese have hotels aimed at business travel linked to ceramics. At night Maranello is very quiet.
