What to see in Neive
Must-sees
Neive is a village in the Langhe, in southern Piedmont, between Alba and Barbaresco and surrounded by vineyards. Its old town occupies the top of a hill and keeps cobbled streets that spiral up to the Clock Tower, a 13th-century civic tower you can visit. On the way you will find noble houses and 17th and 18th-century palazzi, such as the fortified house of the Counts Cotti or the palace of the Counts of Castelborgo, with its gardens.
The parish church of Santi Pietro e Paolo and the confraternity of San Michele, with its old organ, complete the walk, along with several small chapels. But Neive's big attraction is wine. Its territory is part of the Barbaresco area and also produces Dolcetto, Barbera and Moscato. In the village and the hills there are wineries and enoteche where you can taste them, and from the borgo's viewpoints you see rows of vines in every direction.
Free tours and guided visits
There are no regular free tours in Neive, but there are paid guided walks of the old town, which you can book on Civitatis, covering the streets and palazzi with a local guide. Tickets for the Clock Tower are handled by the tourist office. Tastings at local wineries are the other main way to visit.
How long to spend
The old town can be seen in an hour or two at a good pace. If you add a tasting and an unhurried lunch, allow a good half day. With two or three days you can explore the Langhe at a relaxed pace: Barbaresco is next door, Alba a few kilometres away and the Barolo villages less than an hour by car.
Where to stay
Staying in the borgo has real charm, with rural houses and B&Bs in old buildings and the village very quiet at night. The hills are full of agriturismi among the vines, ideal if you have a car. If you want more choice and services, Alba is very close and has buses to Neive.
