What to see in Marina di Camerota
Must-sees
Marina di Camerota is the seaside outlet of the old village of Camerota, on the southern coast of the Cilento, within the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. The village revolves around the harbour, with fishing boats, terraces and a promenade leading to Lentiscelle beach. The coast is limestone, which is why it is full of small coves and caves carved by the water, several of them reachable only by sea.
The classic outing is the Bay of the Infreschi, a cove of very clear water surrounded by scrub, protected as a marine area together with the Masseta coast. You get there by boat or along a scenic path that leaves the village and follows the coast. All along the shore you will see watchtowers built against Saracen pirates. It is also worth going up to Camerota, the upper village, with its steep streets, castle and sea views.
Free tours and guided visits
There are no free tours in Marina di Camerota: it is a seaside village and what is on offer are boat trips. The most common is the outing to the Bay of the Infreschi, which follows the coast, enters some of the caves and stops at coves for a swim. If you prefer walking, the path to the Infreschi can be done on your own, with comfortable shoes, water and no rush, and it is best to avoid the hottest hours in summer.
How long to spend
Half a day is enough for the village and the beach, but people come here to enjoy the sea. Allow at least two or three days: one for the boat to the Infreschi and the caves, another for nearby beaches and coves, and an afternoon to go up to Camerota. With more time, Palinuro and its cape are very close, and you can also explore the Gulf of Policastro towards Scario. July and August are busy; June and September are quieter.
Where to stay
The most convenient choice is to stay in Marina di Camerota itself, near the harbour, where the boats leave and restaurants and the beach are within walking distance. There are small hotels, apartments and holiday homes, and on the outskirts campsites and agriturismi among olive trees. If you want somewhere quieter, upper Camerota has houses in the old village, although you will need a car to get down to the coast. In high season, book ahead.
