What to see in Modena
Must-sees
Modena is an Emilia-Romagna city tied to balsamic vinegar, Lambrusco and sports cars. Its historic centre holds a gem recognised by UNESCO: the Romanesque cathedral, with reliefs by Wiligelmo on the façade, the Ghirlandina tower, visible from almost anywhere, and Piazza Grande. A few steps away is the Ducal Palace, the former residence of the Este family and now home to the Military Academy.
The Palazzo dei Musei houses the Galleria Estense, with paintings and objects from the Este court. For food and shopping, the Albinelli market is a very pleasant stop. Motoring fans have the Enzo Ferrari Museum, next to the founder's birthplace, in the city itself, and the Ferrari Museum in Maranello a few kilometres away. On the outskirts and in the hills there are acetaie where traditional balsamic vinegar is aged in barrels.
Free tours and guided visits
Modena has no regular free walking tours. What you will find are guided tours of the centre and private tours, as well as visits to an acetaia to learn how balsamic vinegar is made and taste it. For motoring, there are tickets for the Ferrari museums, with a shuttle bus linking them, and tickets for the Lamborghini Museum, in a town on the plain between Modena and Bologna.
How long to spend
The centre of Modena can be seen in half a day: the cathedral, the Ghirlandina, Piazza Grande and a walk to the Ducal Palace. If you add the Galleria Estense and a leisurely lunch, allow a whole day. With two days you can add an acetaia and the Ferrari museums in Modena and Maranello. Bologna is less than half an hour away by train, so the two are easy to combine.
Where to stay
The nicest option is to stay in the historic centre, near Piazza Grande, where there are small hotels and apartments in old buildings and everything is on foot. The station area is practical if you are getting around by train. If your trip revolves around Ferrari or the countryside, Maranello and the hills to the south have quieter hotels and country houses, best with a car.
