What to see in Maiori
Must-sees
Maiori is on the Amalfi Coast, between Minori and Capo d'Orso, and opens onto a wide bay with a sandy beach and a long seafront promenade. From the sea you can see the collegiate church of Santa Maria a Mare at the top of the old town, with its bell tower and ceramic dome. Inside it has three naves and a gilded coffered ceiling. Corso Reginna, the main street, climbs from the beach with shops, cafés and Palazzo Mezzacapo, whose gardens overlook the centre.
Above the town stands the castle of San Nicola de Thoro-Plano, a medieval fortress with views over the whole bay. Towards Salerno, on the coast road, the abbey of Santa Maria de Olearia has chapels with medieval frescoes. The best-known walk is the Path of the Lemons, a trail through terraced lemon groves linking Maiori with Minori via the hamlet of Torre.
Free tours and guided visits
There are no free tours in Maiori. What the area offers are day trips leaving from the coast: to Pompeii, to Pompeii and Vesuvius, to Pompeii and Herculaneum, and to Capri, with or without Anacapri. For something more local, there are guided hikes along the Path of the Lemons. The rest you can see on your own, as the centre is small and easy to explore on foot.
How long to spend
Half a day is enough for the town: the collegiate church, the corso and the seafront. With a full day you can add the Path of the Lemons and an afternoon on the beach. Maiori works very well as a base for three or four days, because boats and buses leave from here for Amalfi, Positano and Salerno, and by car Ravello is a short drive up.
Where to stay
The most convenient option is the seafront or the streets of the centre, where there are beachfront hotels, apartments and guesthouses, with the pier and bus stop a few steps away. On the hillsides there are places to stay with views, quieter but with slopes and steps. If you want somewhere smaller, Minori is a short walk away.
