What to see in Arezzo
Must-sees
Arezzo is in eastern Tuscany, on a hill overlooking four valleys: the Casentino, the Valdarno, the Valtiberina and the Valdichiana. Its great treasure is in the basilica of San Francesco, where Piero della Francesca painted the cycle of the Legend of the True Cross. From there you climb to Piazza Grande, sloping and lined with palazzi, with Vasari's loggias on one side and the apse of the Romanesque Pieve di Santa Maria on another.
At the top of the city, the cathedral holds stained glass by Guillaume de Marcillat and a Magdalene by Piero della Francesca, and close by is the Medici Fortress, with a park and views over the valley. The church of San Domenico has a crucifix by Cimabue, and the house of Giorgio Vasari, who was born here, is open to visitors. Next to the station are the remains of the Roman amphitheatre and the archaeological museum. Piazza Grande also hosts a monthly antiques fair and the Giostra del Saracino joust.
Free tours and guided visits
Arezzo has no regular free walking tours. To get to know it with explanations you can book a private tour of the centre, which helps you place Piero della Francesca's frescoes and the city's history. There is also a sightseeing bus, practical for seeing the main sights without climbing all the hills on foot, and tastings of local wines.
How long to spend
A day covers the essentials: San Francesco, Piazza Grande, the Pieve, the cathedral and the fortress. To see Piero della Francesca's frescoes it is best to book your ticket before you go. With two days you can add museums and a trip to Cortona, Anghiari or the villages of the Casentino.
Where to stay
The historic centre, between Piazza Grande and San Francesco, has small hotels, guesthouses and apartments, with everything on foot. The station area and the lower part of the city are practical if you arrive by train or want more options. In the surrounding countryside there are agriturismi and villas with pools for those travelling by car around eastern Tuscany.
