How to choose a pousada

What a pousada is

Pousadas are Portugal’s equivalent of the Spanish paradores: hotels in historic monasteries, castles and palaces, or in places with outstanding scenery. Today they are run by the Pestana group under the Pousadas de Portugal brand.

What to check before booking

Check whether the pousada is in town or in the countryside, because several need a car, and whether the building is historic or newly built. In summer the ones in the Alentejo and the Algarve fill up early; those in the north and the interior make a good base for exploring the region at a relaxed pace.
