What the Cantabrian coast is like
It’s about 200 km of coastline between the Basque Country and Asturias, with sandy beaches between cliffs, marshes and seaside towns. A few kilometres inland the green valleys and the Picos de Europa begin.
Which area to choose
Santander has the most choice and the Sardinero beaches. To the east, Laredo, Noja and Castro Urdiales are summer resorts with long beaches. To the west, Suances, Santillana del Mar, Comillas and San Vicente de la Barquera combine beaches with villages full of heritage.
When to go
July and August are the liveliest months and the most expensive. June and September usually have good weather and fewer people. The weather changes quickly, so bring something warm even in summer.
Getting around
Santander airport is about 5 km from the city. The Cantabrian motorway runs along the whole coast, and there are narrow-gauge trains and buses between the main towns.
