Historic centre
Calle Santo Domingo, Calle Juan Infante and Calle del Río form the main route between the Plaza Mayor and the Collegiate Church. Many places to stay are in mansions with coats of arms on the façade and wooden beams. In the evening the tour coaches leave and the cobbles belong to those staying the night. Wheeling a suitcase over those stones is hard work, and the car is left outside the old centre.

Village entrance and the Altamira road
Around the old town and on the road up to the Altamira Museum there are hotels and houses with gardens and their own parking. From here you can walk both to the centre and to the museum. It is convenient for families with children and for those arriving on the motorway who want to unload easily.
Ubiarco and the coast
Towards the sea, the municipality includes small villages such as Ubiarco, with meadows running down to the cliffs and the Santa Justa chapel wedged into the rock beside the beach. There are rural houses and inns in a very peaceful setting. It is for those after scenery and coastal walks who do not mind driving everywhere.

Suances
Suances, at the mouth of the San Martín de la Arena estuary, has La Concha and Los Locos beaches, the latter popular with surfers. There are apartments, fish restaurants and a holiday atmosphere. It suits you if the beach is your main plan and Santillana is one more visit. In summer it has far more nightlife than the village.
Torrelavega
The nearest town has a station with local trains to Santander, shops and more urban accommodation. It works for business trips, or if you are travelling without a car and want to alternate Santillana with other visits around Cantabria.
