Puebla Vieja and the port

Staying in the Puebla Vieja puts you in the oldest part of Laredo, among houses with coats of arms and sloping streets climbing to Santa María de la Asunción. You walk down to the bars of the Rúa Mayor and, through the La Atalaya tunnel, come out at the port, by the Rastrillar fort. It is the area chosen by those who come to see the town and eat fish beside the boats. Bear the slopes in mind if you have heavy luggage.

Best-rated in this area: Apartamento Room Laredo, with a score of 8.4 from 220 reviews.

Centre and Alameda Miramar

Between the Puebla Vieja and the start of the beach is the modern centre, with the Alameda Miramar, shops, bars and supermarkets. From here you can walk to both the Puebla Vieja and the sand. It suits travellers staying several days who want services close by and prefer a town with life all year, not just in summer.

La Salvé promenade

The seafront promenade runs along La Salvé for kilometres, lined with apartment blocks with sea-facing terraces. Families prefer it because the beach is wide, with fine sand and plenty of space even in August. In the morning it fills with people walking or running by the water. The further you get from the centre, the more residential and quiet it becomes.

El Puntal

At the end of the beach, where the sand narrows opposite Santoña, is El Puntal. The feel here is peaceful, with dunes, views of the estuary and Monte Buciero, and less traffic. In season the launch to Santoña leaves from this point, handy for a trip without a car. To go to dinner in the Puebla Vieja you will need a long walk or the car.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Playamar Spa, with a score of 7.7 from 841 reviews.
