Old town and the port

The old town clusters around the port, at the foot of the church of Santa María de la Asunción. Beside it are the castle-lighthouse, the medieval bridge and, perched on a rock above the sea, the Santa Ana chapel. You can walk it all in a short while.

Calle Ardigales and the streets around it are packed with pintxo and sharing-plate bars. Sleeping here lets you go out to dinner without watching the clock. At weekends things stay lively until late.

Best-rated in this area: Ardigales 11, with a score of 8.7 from 1,418 reviews.

Amestoy park and the seafront

Between the port and the beach stretches Amestoy park, with the seafront promenade open to the bay. It is the most urban part of Castro, with apartment blocks, shops and terraces. It suits you if you want the old town and the beach equally within walking distance. In the mornings it is the favourite area for running or strolling by the sea.

Best-rated in this area: Ardigales 11, with a score of 8.7 from 1,418 reviews.

Brazomar

Brazomar is the main town beach, sandy and with full services in season. Around it are apartment blocks, parks and streets quieter than those of the centre. Families prefer it in summer because they can get to the sand without crossing the whole town. From here the castle and the church can be seen across the bay, and walking there along the promenade is easy.

Best-rated in this area: Las Rocas Playa Hotel, with a score of 8.9 from 3,234 reviews.

Ostende and Cotolino

To the north, Ostende beach lies below a clifftop promenade. The Cotolino estates and the surrounding area are full of detached houses and apartments with gardens, in a residential setting.

It is the area for those seeking rest, travelling with a dog or needing parking. From here you are quickly on the motorway to Bilbao or Santander. However, to get to the old town allow for a good walk or take the car.

Best-rated in this area: Ardigales 11, with a score of 8.7 from 1,418 reviews.
