Where to stay in Somo: the best areas

Somo by the ferry pier

Central Somo is laid out around the pier for the boats that cross the bay to central Santander. Here you will find the bars, ice-cream parlours, supermarkets and most of the surf schools. Staying in this area lets you walk to the beach, to your lesson and to the boat. On days with swell the promenade fills with people watching the surfers.

Stay here if you want to combine beach and city without the car, and for the surfy atmosphere in the evenings.

Loredo

To the east, the same stretch of sand runs on to Loredo, a more residential village with low houses, housing estates and campsites. The beach is still wide with good waves, but quieter than Somo. Its streets are flat and easy to cycle. It suits families and anyone who wants a peaceful night's sleep, although you will have a fair walk or a drive to reach the pier.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Costa Mar, with a score of 8.7 from 989 reviews.

Langre

Beyond Loredo, Langre beach lies at the foot of a cliff, with meadows above and a wilder feel. Getting down to the sand means using steps or ramps, worth bearing in mind with pushchairs. Around it are rural houses and small places to stay among the farms. This is the area for couples and for those who prefer scenery to services, with a car all but essential.

Santander, across the bay

If your trip centres more on the city, stay in Santander and use the boat for your beach days. It drops you by the Paseo de Pereda, close to the centre, the Jardines de Pereda and the Centro BotΓn. You will have more restaurants and nightlife, and the boat ride back becomes part of the plan.
