Where to stay in Comillas: the best areas

Historic centre and Sobrellano

Central Comillas revolves around Plaza del Corro de Campíos, with the town hall, the church of San Cristóbal and the Tres Caños fountain close by. Cobbled streets and stone mansions lead to the Sobrellano Palace, its pantheon chapel and Gaudí’s El Capricho, in the same grounds. From here you can see the old Pontifical University on the hill opposite.

This area suits you if you want to do everything on foot and eat on the terraces in the centre. In summer it is busy until midnight.

Best-rated in this area: La Solana Montañesa, with a score of 9.1 from 1,480 reviews.

Beach and harbour

Below the old town are the small fishing harbour and Comillas beach, with fine sand and calm water. Next to it is the cemetery with Llimona’s angel, set among the ruined walls of a Gothic church. It is the natural choice for families who want to walk down with the parasol without taking the car. The promenade along the beach then climbs to the centre, so restaurants and shops are a short walk away.

Oyambre and La Rabia

To the west begins Oyambre Natural Park, with the beach of the same name, dunes and the La Rabia estuary. It is an open stretch, loved by surfers and anyone looking for long, undeveloped beaches. Campsites and houses with meadows abound, and San Vicente de la Barquera is close by road.

Ruiloba and Ruiseñada

Inland and to the east, Ruiseñada and the hamlets of Ruiloba mix meadows, cows and traditional mountain houses. Luaña beach and the road to Santillana del Mar are close. They suit travellers with a car, groups or those with dogs who want quiet nights. Many rural houses have gardens and, on clear days, views of the Picos de Europa.
