Old town and the Alameda

The old town is centred on Plaza de los Naranjos, surrounded by narrow white streets full of flowerpots, the town hall and the church of La Encarnación. Next to it is the Alameda, a park with tiled benches, from which Avenida del Mar, lined with Dalí sculptures, runs down to the beach. Everything is within walking distance: shops, terraces, tapas bars and the seafront. It suits those who want to see the town and would rather leave the car behind.

Best-rated in this area: Amàre Beach Hotel Marbella - Adults Only Recommended, with a score of 9.1 from 2,974 reviews.

Seafront and Playa de la Venus

If you want sand on your doorstep, look at the front line between Playa de la Venus and Playa de la Fontanilla. These are town beaches with beach bars, sunbeds and facilities, and the old town is a few streets away. The promenade runs west along the coast, and keen walkers can follow it all the way to Puerto Banús, though it is a long walk.

Best-rated in this area: Nobu Hotel Marbella, with a score of 9.2 from 946 reviews.

The Golden Mile

This is the stretch of coast between the centre and Puerto Banús. It has large residential estates, villas and resorts with gardens running almost down to the sea, and the King Abdulaziz mosque is visible from the road. It is an area for relaxing and driving: there are few street-level shops and you will need to move around to go out for tapas. In return, many properties have direct access to the promenade and quieter beaches.

Best-rated in this area: NH Collection Marbella, with a score of 8.5 from 3,046 reviews.

Puerto Banús and Nueva Andalucía

Puerto Banús is a marina with yachts, fashion boutiques, restaurants and bars open late. It suits people who want to go out at night without needing a taxi home. Heading up towards the hills is Nueva Andalucía, with residential areas surrounded by golf courses, quieter and designed for long stays or families wanting a pool and space.

Best-rated in this area: Aloha Gardens by Vacation Care, with a score of 8.1 from 100 reviews.
