Centre, Arenal and Calle Larga

Jerez's shopping heart is spread between the Arenal, Plaza Plateros and the pedestrian Calle Larga. From here you can walk to the Alcázar, the cathedral and many sherry bodegas, which are scattered around the old town itself. At night there are tabancos (traditional sherry bars) open on several nearby streets and plenty of restaurants. It is the area for first-time visitors who want to do everything without a car.

Many streets in the old town are narrow and one-way, so if you arrive by car you will have to find a public car park.

Santiago and San Miguel

North of the centre, Santiago keeps its narrow streets, communal houses and the church that gives it its name. San Miguel, to the south, surrounds its great Gothic church and is a step from the Arenal. Both have flamenco clubs (peñas) and bars where people sing, and a much more local feel. Choose one of them if flamenco is the reason for your trip and you don't mind a smaller choice of places to stay.

Best-rated in this area: ASTUTO Boutique Jerez - Adults Only, with a score of 8.8 from 2,790 reviews.

Avenida Álvaro Domecq

This wide avenue runs north from the centre and has larger hotels, often with their own parking. It is next to González Hontoria park, where the Horse Fair is held, and very close to the equestrian school and its horse show. Good for business trips, groups and those arriving by road who plan to head to the coast or the hills afterwards.

Best-rated in this area: Hipotels Sherry Park, with a score of 9.0 from 6,081 reviews.

Around the station

The train and bus stations are side by side, east of the old town. Staying here saves journeys if you plan to take the train to Cádiz, El Puerto or Seville during your stay, or a bus to Sanlúcar. The centre is a short walk away, though the area has less nightlife and less charm than the old town.
