Historic centre

If it is your first time in Málaga, stay in the old town. Calle Larios, Plaza de la Constitución, the cathedral and the Picasso Museum are all a few steps away. The Alcazaba and the Roman Theatre are on the same street, at the foot of Gibralfaro hill. The streets are pedestrianised and there are tapas bars on almost every corner, so it stays busy late into the night. Ask for an inside room if you are a light sleeper.

Best-rated in this area: Vincci Larios Diez, with a score of 10.0 from 5,813 reviews.

Soho

Between the Alameda Principal and the port lies Soho, a grid of streets covered in street-art murals, with the Contemporary Art Centre by the Guadalmedina river. It is quieter than the old town and Calle Larios is just a short walk away. Good for staying central without so much bustle. The Atarazanas market is close by for fruit or a drink at its counters.

Best-rated in this area: Vincci Larios Diez, with a score of 10.0 from 5,813 reviews.

La Malagueta

The city beach is right next to the centre. From La Malagueta you can walk along Muelle Uno, home to the Centre Pompidou, and the Paseo de la Farola. It is a comfortable area for families and for anyone who wants to swim without taking transport and keep sightseeing on foot.

Best-rated in this area: Gran Hotel Miramar GL, with a score of 9.2 from 4,943 reviews.

Pedregalejo and El Palo

To the east, these old fishing districts have a long promenade and beach bars where sardines are grilled on skewers over the sand. The atmosphere is more local and relaxed. City buses run along the coast to the centre. A good option in summer if you want the beach with a neighbourhood feel.

Best-rated in this area: El Nogal Home, with a score of 8.7 from 2,524 reviews.

Around María Zambrano station

If you are travelling for work or want to get around the Costa del Sol, this area is practical. High-speed trains stop here, as does the local train to the airport, Torremolinos and Fuengirola. You can walk to the centre by crossing the river through the El Perchel district.
