Old town and the cathedral

Inside the old town everything is close at hand: the cathedral, the Torre Tavira, the Central Market and Plaza de las Flores, with its stalls and fried-fish shops. The streets are narrow and straight and you can walk from one end to the other. It is the obvious choice for a first visit and for anyone who wants to go out for tapas without watching the clock. A car is more trouble than it is worth here, so use a public car park if you drive.

Best-rated in this area: Soho Boutique Cádiz, with a score of 8.9 from 5,985 reviews.

La Viña and La Caleta

La Viña is the most traditional quarter, home of the carnival and fried fish. Calle Virgen de la Palma fills with tables, and La Caleta beach is a few steps away, between the Santa Catalina and San Sebastián castles. If you want a morning swim and to watch the sunset from the water, this is your spot. At night the neighbourhood's fried-fish shops and taverns fill with locals, especially in spring and summer.

Best-rated in this area: Plaza de la Luz Cádiz, with a score of 8.9 from 14,067 reviews.

Santa María and the station

Santa María, one of the city's most flamenco neighbourhoods, is next to Plaza de Sevilla, where the train station is. It is a good base if you arrive or leave by train, and also for catching the catamaran to El Puerto de Santa María or Rota from the nearby pier. The Roman Theatre and the El Pópulo quarter, with its arches and oldest streets, are close by.

Best-rated in this area: Casual con Duende Cadiz by Casual Hoteles, with a score of 9.4 from 5,557 reviews.

Playa de la Victoria

Beyond the Puerta de Tierra gate begins modern Cádiz, with wide avenues and a long beach of fine sand along the promenade. It is the choice of many families and of anyone who puts the beach before the old town. The buildings are newer and parking is usually easier. City buses and local train stops such as Segunda Aguada and Estadio take you to the centre.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Spa Cádiz Plaza, with a score of 8.6 from 2,979 reviews.
