Santa Cruz and the cathedral

The old Jewish quarter is a maze of whitewashed alleys, patios and squares lined with orange trees. You sleep next to the cathedral, the Giralda and the Real Alcázar, and can walk to the Murillo gardens. It is the most convenient area for a first visit, although it is packed with tour groups during the day. At night it empties out and is lovely for a stroll.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Fernando III, with a score of 9.4 from 10,825 reviews.

El Arenal

Between Avenida de la Constitución and the Guadalquivir is El Arenal, with the Maestranza bullring and theatre and the Torre del Oro. You have old-fashioned tapas bars and the riverside walk close by. It is central and a little calmer at night. The tram runs along Avenida de la Constitución.

Best-rated in this area: Vincci Molviedro, with a score of 9.6 from 5,253 reviews.

La Alfalfa and the Alameda

The north of the old town has more of a neighbourhood feel. La Alfalfa has small squares full of bars, and a few steps away is La Encarnación with the Setas, the huge wooden viewing platform. Further north, the Alameda de Hércules is the place for dinner and drinks. Good if you want nightlife.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Fernando III, with a score of 9.4 from 10,825 reviews.

Triana

Cross the Isabel II bridge and you are in Triana, the quarter of ceramics and flamenco. Calle Betis has terraces overlooking the river, and Triana market is a good place for breakfast or tapas. It feels less touristy than the other bank. It suits travellers who want a local atmosphere and don't mind walking a bit more. There is also a metro stop at Plaza de Cuba.

Best-rated in this area: Zenit Sevilla, with a score of 9.0 from 5,383 reviews.

Nervión and Santa Justa

If you are travelling for work or arriving by high-speed train, this modern area sits next to Santa Justa station, with shopping centres and offices. The metro takes you to the centre. It is useful if you come by car, as parking is easier than in the old town.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Sevilla Center, with a score of 8.8 from 10,485 reviews.
