The Jewish Quarter and the Mezquita

For a first visit, nothing beats sleeping a few steps from the Mosque-Cathedral. Calleja de las Flores, the synagogue, the Roman bridge and the Calahorra tower across the river are all close by. Early in the morning and at dusk, the narrow white streets empty out and feel completely different. Car access is heavily restricted: if you are driving, park outside the old town and walk in.

Best-rated in this area: Eurostars Conquistador, with a score of 8.7 from 12,936 reviews.

San Basilio and the Alcázar

Next to the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos is San Basilio, one of the neighbourhoods with the most flower-filled patios in the city. It is small, residential and very quiet, and a short walk from the Mezquita. It suits couples and anyone looking for rest, as there are hardly any late-night bars. The royal stables and the Alcázar gardens are next door.

Best-rated in this area: Eurostars Maimonides, with a score of 8.8 from 7,954 reviews.

La Corredera and Santa Marina

East of the centre, the arcaded, square Plaza de la Corredera is a good spot for breakfast or a drink. From here you climb up to the San Pedro, San Lorenzo and Santa Marina neighbourhoods, with their medieval Fernandine churches and the Palacio de Viana and its twelve patios.

This is the most local side of Córdoba, with old-fashioned taverns and fewer tourists. The Jewish Quarter is an easy walk away.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Macià Alfaros, with a score of 8.6 from 8,940 reviews.

Las Tendillas and Gran Capitán

Plaza de las Tendillas marks the city's shopping centre. Pedestrian streets such as Cruz Conde lead off it, and nearby the Gran Capitán boulevard heads towards the train and bus stations. It is the best choice if you arrive by high-speed train, want to shop or are travelling for work. There are plenty of tapas bars, and the Mezquita is a longish walk downhill.
