Where to stay in the Canary Islands

Choosing an island

Tenerife and Gran Canaria offer the most variety: beaches in the south, cities and mountains. Lanzarote and Fuerteventura stand out for their volcanic landscapes and long beaches, with plenty of wind for sailing and windsurfing. La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro are smaller and quieter, for hiking and nature.

South or north

In Tenerife and Gran Canaria the south (Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos, Maspalomas, Puerto Rico) gets more sun and has most of the beach hotels. The north is greener and cooler, with towns such as Santa Cruz, La Laguna, Puerto de la Cruz and Las Palmas, which are lively all year and have more city-style hotels.

When to go

The climate is mild all year and winter is the high season, especially with visitors from northern Europe. To get around beyond the resorts it is worth hiring a car; ferries and short flights connect the islands.
