Where to stay in Fuerteventura: the best areas

Corralejo

In the north, Corralejo combines beaches, atmosphere and good connections. South of the town begins the Corralejo Dunes Natural Park, with white sand and turquoise water. Boats to the island of Lobos and to Lanzarote leave from the harbour. There are surf schools, lots of bars and the island's liveliest nightlife, so it appeals to couples and young groups.

El Cotillo and Lajares

On the west coast, El Cotillo is a quieter fishing village with the TostΓ³n lighthouse and calm-water lagoons that are great for families with children. South of the village there are beaches with good waves. Lajares, inland, is a favourite hideaway for surfers. You will want a car in this area.

Best-rated in this area: Cotillo House, with a score of 8.6 from 1,522 reviews.

Caleta de Fuste

On the east coast, very close to the airport, Caleta de Fuste has a bay-shaped beach with little swell, a marina and a small castle by the sea. It is the favourite area for families and for those who come to relax and play golf. It sits in the middle of the island, well placed for driving trips north and south.

Puerto del Rosario

The capital is more practical than touristy. It has the port, most of the services and the bus station for the island's routes. An option for business trips or short stays, with Playa Blanca on the outskirts.

Costa Calma and JandΓa

In the south, the JandΓa peninsula has the longest beaches. Costa Calma and the Sotavento beaches have constant wind and tidal lagoons, a paradise for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Morro Jable, further south, has a promenade and a lighthouse on the sand, and ferries to Gran Canaria leave from its port. It is the area for beach and peace, though it is a long way from the north.
