Las Palmas and Las Canteras

The capital combines city and beach. Stay near Las Canteras and you get a very long promenade, golden sand and a natural rock reef that calms the sea. Santa Catalina park and the port area are next door. A guagua (the local name for the bus) takes you to Vegueta, the historic quarter with Santa Ana cathedral and the Casa de ColΓ³n, and to Triana, the shopping area. It is a good choice all year round, as there is local life outside the season. Buses to the south and the airport leave from San Telmo and Santa Catalina stations.

Playa del InglΓ©s and Maspalomas

The south is the island's main resort area. The Maspalomas dunes, a nature reserve, separate Playa del InglΓ©s from the lighthouse and the lagoon. There is sunshine almost every day, very long beaches and plenty of nightlife around the Yumbo centre. Next door, San AgustΓn is quieter, and Meloneras, by the lighthouse, has a promenade lined with restaurants and a more polished feel.

Puerto Rico, Amadores and MogΓ‘n

Further west the coast turns to cliffs and coves sheltered from the wind. Puerto Rico and Amadores have calm beaches that families love. Puerto de MogΓ‘n is a fishing village with canals and white houses, ideal if you are looking for peace. MogΓ‘n has a market and lots of restaurants around the marina.

Tejeda and the interior

If you prefer the mountains, stay in the centre of the island. Tejeda looks out at the Roque Nublo and is close to the Pico de las Nieves. Teror, with its basilica and wooden balconies, is another good base. You will need a car up here. The roads are winding, but the views make up for it. The night sky is very clear, and the interior is cooler than the coast. It is the best base for hiking.
