Where to stay in Lanzarote: the best areas

Puerto del Carmen

This is the island's largest resort area and is close to the airport. Along the Avenida de las Playas you have golden sand, such as Playa Grande, and a continuous line of bars, shops and restaurants. Around the old harbour the atmosphere is quieter. It suits those who want a beach, services close at hand and some nightlife without relying on a car.

Playa Blanca

At the southern tip, Playa Blanca has a long promenade and a more relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. The clear-water Papagayo beaches are close by, and Timanfaya National Park is a reasonable drive away. Ferries to Corralejo in Fuerteventura leave from its harbour. A good base with children or if you want to rest.

Costa Teguise

On the east coast, Costa Teguise is an area of low-rise developments with sheltered beaches such as Las Cucharas. It is a popular windsurfing spot and close to Arrecife. It suits those looking for peace and water sports. It also has a golf course and a small centre with restaurants, without the bustle of Puerto del Carmen.

Arrecife

The capital offers a more urban, authentically Canarian stay. The Charco de San GinΓ©s lagoon, with its boats and terraces, and the San Gabriel castle are its prettiest walks, and El Reducto beach is right in the centre. It is the most practical base if you are travelling by bus, as almost every line on the island starts here.

Famara and the north

If you are after calm and scenery, the north feels like another island. Famara has a huge beach beneath the cliffs, very popular for surfing. HarΓa, among palm trees, and Γ“rzola, with boats to La Graciosa, complete the area. You will need a car here. Famara village is small, with sandy streets and few services, and HarΓa is the base for driving up to the Mirador del RΓo.
