What is the Eixample?

The Eixample is the extension Ildefons Cerdà designed in 1859 so that Barcelona could grow beyond its walls: a grid of blocks with their corners cut off at an angle. Most of the city’s Modernisme is here, such as Casa Batlló and La Pedrera on Passeig de Gràcia, or the Sagrada Família further east. It is divided into the Dreta, east of Passeig de Gràcia, and the Esquerra, to the west.

How to get there

The metro criss-crosses the district: Passeig de Gràcia (lines 2, 3 and 4 and Rodalies), Diagonal (3 and 5), Universitat (1 and 2), Girona (4) and Hospital Clínic (5), among others. From the airport, the Aerobús stops at Plaça de Catalunya and Plaça d’Espanya, on the edges of the Eixample, and from Sants line 5 gets there in a few stops.

When rooms are hardest to find

During big congresses at the Fira, above all the Mobile World Congress between late February and early March, and in summer, when the whole city fills up. Also during the La Mercè festival in late September.

Which area to choose

The Dreta, around Passeig de Gràcia and Rambla de Catalunya, has most of the upmarket hotels. The Esquerra is more residential, a little cheaper and full of bars and restaurants, with the Hospital Clínic and the Sant Antoni Market. This page looks up to 1.2 kilometres from Rambla de Catalunya, in the middle of the district.
