Cathedral and Plaza Mayor

The old town is small and easy to explore at a leisurely pace. Stay here and the cathedral, the Arco de Santa María and the arcaded Plaza Mayor are on your doorstep. The Paseo del Espolón, along the Arlanzón river, is the place for an evening stroll. For tapas, Calle San Lorenzo and Calle Sombrerería have bars serving morcilla (black pudding) and pinchos. It is the best base for a short break.

Best-rated in this area: NH Collection Palacio de Burgos, with a score of 8.9 from 6,601 reviews.

San Esteban quarter and the castle

Behind the cathedral, the streets climb towards Castle Hill. The Camino de Santiago passes through here, entering the city along Calle Fernán González. You will find the church of San Esteban, with its altarpiece, and the church of San Nicolás. The atmosphere is quiet and it is a good option for pilgrims. From the castle viewpoint you can see the whole city. At night it is a silent area.

South bank of the Arlanzón

Across the Santa María bridge is the area around the Museum of Human Evolution, which tells the story of the Atapuerca finds. Next to it is the bus station, on Calle Miranda. It is a flat area with wide streets and less bustle, and the cathedral is a short walk away. Good if you are travelling by bus or with children. From here you can also walk to Las Huelgas monastery, following the river west.

Gamonal and the train station

This large district to the east is residential and more practical if you arrive by car, as parking is easier. The train station is to the north, far from the centre, so take a bus or taxi. Frequent city buses run to the centre. A useful option for long stays or business trips, with local shops and restaurants.

Best-rated in this area: Hostal Acanto, with a score of 7.7 from 1,187 reviews.
