Where to stay on the Camino de Santiago

What the Camino is like

The Camino de Santiago, or Way of St James, is a set of pilgrimage routes that end at the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. The most walked are the French Way, which enters Spain at Roncesvalles, the Portuguese Way, from Porto or Tui, the Northern Way, along the Cantabrian coast, and the Primitive Way, which sets out from Oviedo and passes through Lugo. Many pilgrims then carry on to Finisterre or Muxía.

Albergue, guesthouse or hotel

On the Camino you can sleep in public and private albergues (pilgrim hostels), guesthouses, rural houses or hotels. Public albergues can’t be booked and fill up on a first-come, first-served basis, so in high season many pilgrims prefer to book a room to be sure of a bed and a good rest. Here we bring together the hotels, hostales and rural houses in the stage towns.

Which stretch to choose

To earn the Compostela you have to walk at least the last 100 km, which is why Sarria, on the French Way, and Tui, on the Portuguese Way, are the most common starting points. Those final stages (Portomarín, Palas de Rei, Melide, Arzúa) are where accommodation fills up most. If you have more days, Roncesvalles, Pamplona, Burgos and León are big stage towns with plenty of choice.

When to go

May, June and September are the most pleasant months for walking. In July and August there are more pilgrims and it’s best to book ahead, especially in Galicia, and in Compostela Holy Years, when 25 July falls on a Sunday, numbers soar. In winter many albergues close, which makes the hotels that stay open even more important.

Luggage and transport

There are services that carry your backpack from one place to the next, so give your name and arrival date when you book. Santiago has an airport and a train station, and to start in Sarria there are trains from Madrid and other Galician cities. Once you finish, there are buses from Santiago to Finisterre and Muxía.
