From Roncesvalles to Santiago via Pamplona, Burgos and León: the most walked Camino, with a stage town every few hours.

Where to stay on the Camino Francés

What the French Way is like

It’s the most walked and best equipped Camino. It crosses the Pyrenees at Roncesvalles and goes through Navarre, La Rioja, Burgos, Palencia and León before entering Galicia at O Cebreiro. It’s about 750 km, usually walked in around five weeks.

Where to sleep

Every stage has towns with hotels, guesthouses and rural houses, and cities such as Pamplona, Logroño, Burgos, León and Ponferrada have lots of choice. The Galician part, from Sarria to Santiago, is the busiest: in Portomarín, Palas de Rei, Melide and Arzúa it’s best to book in summer. The plateaus of Palencia and León have small villages with few beds, such as Carrión de los Condes or Sahagún.

When to go

Spring and early autumn are the best time. In summer the plateau is very hot and Galicia is packed, and in winter the passes at Roncesvalles and O Cebreiro can have snow.

Getting around

Pamplona, Logroño, Burgos, León and Ponferrada have trains and buses, so you can start or leave the Camino at many points. Sarria has direct trains from Madrid and other cities.
