Staying near Salzburg Old Town: what you need to know

What is the Old Town?

It is Salzburg’s Baroque centre, a World Heritage Site between the Salzach and the fortress hill. Here are Mozart’s birthplace on Getreidegasse, the cathedral, the Residenz and the market squares.

Getting around from here

Everything is walkable, and the funicular climbs to Hohensalzburg Fortress. The railway station is about 20 minutes’ walk or five by bus, with trains to Vienna, Munich and Hallstatt.

When the hotels fill up

During the Salzburg Festival, from late July through August, and in Advent, old town hotels sell out and triple their prices.

Which area to choose

Hotels on Getreidegasse and Judengasse are right in the centre. Across the river, by Linzer Gasse and Mirabell, you are five minutes away and pay a little less.

If you’d rather be in the old town, see the hotels in Salzburg city centre or our guide to the best areas to stay in Salzburg.
